Zika virus cases found in parts of Kerala; authorities issued a state-wide alert

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the state, with over 13,000 infections reported on Friday, the largest number of any Indian state. A 24-year-old pregnant lady was among the Zika patients being treated at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable because they can pass the mosquito-borne infection on to their unborn children, which can cause life-threatening illnesses including Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare auto-immune disease. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Zika is mostly transferred by the bite of the Aedes mosquito, although it can also be transmitted sexually. Listen in!
