The Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas wedding may have wound up but the buzz generated by the big fat Indian wedding refuses to die down not just at home but also in the US. Chopra, who has quickly become one of the most popular faces on American television following her successful spell as the lead of Quantico, seems to have stirred several fancies out of their slumber with her dramatic wedding photos and and snippets.
However, while most people have congratulated the actress and Jonas and wished them a good life together, an article that was published recently by The New York Mag's The Cut has received widespread criticism for the deliberate poor light in which it portrays Chopra.
The article, headlined "Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?" starts by calling Chopra a 'scam artist' who allegedly tricked a naive and young Jonas into a lifelong commitment when all he really wanted was a fling.
"That’s right: Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday, December the 1st, and I’ll tell you why I think so," the article read. It went on to add: "All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist."
While the writer provides no basis for making such claims, she goes on to shower Chopra with sexist and ageist comments, belittling he career and work. She also seems to make light of Indian wedding customs and traditions and describes how Chopra thrives on undue indulgence and publicity.
The article also slams Jonas, commenting on his "interest in older women" and citing examples of the same. The writer goes on to vilify Chopra as a gold digger whose 'team' is constantly on the job of finding her eligible men to date and marry.
The article has spawned a lot of criticism on social media with many accusing it of being racist, sexist, baseless and in extremely bad taste.
The sexism, racism & xenophobia really jumped out lol. You're so mad that a deserving Indian woman found someone who values her worth. The one time a South Asian woman is thriving in Hollywood after working so hard, she gets called a scammer. I hope you do some soul-searching.— Eva (@EvaFromThe6ix) December 5, 2018
1. He isn't a helpless bachcha who got trapped. She, a RELEVANT star resurrected a has-been child star's "career".— Nehmat Kaur (@nehmatks) December 5, 2018
Hey The Cut, this is bullshit!! Getting a black woman to share her "views" about a successful, self made brown Indian woman doesn't change the fact that the piece is racist & sexist. Shaming a brown woman for her lifestyle choices shows your disgusting mindset. #PriyankaChopra https://t.co/AnpiGCWKER— Amena (@Fashionopolis) December 5, 2018
There is an art to dissecting celebrity culture, and this dumb, petty, misogynistic, racist piece of trash isn’t it. I really don’t feel like listing the many ways @TheCut fucked up on Hindu culture before even getting to the banality of this dumb story. https://t.co/mUCDCm8xaG— Beejoli Shah (@beejoli) December 5, 2018
What a nasty piece of goods the writer is. Did you mean to be funny? Cos you end up sounding sexist & racist. A dreadful piece.— Naomi Datta (@nowme_datta) December 5, 2018
‘How to make him say yes’ ‘how to make yourself irresistible for a guy’ - the writer seems to be a fan of such articles— Renuka Vyavahare (@renukaVyavahare) December 5, 2018
Wow. Didn't really expect this type of narrative. Whether they're real or not, this article is a new low. Hope you find better things to write about.— name cannot be blank (@jwakhan) December 5, 2018
this article made less points then when i was 12 and trying to prove larry stylinson— delaney (@delaneyyay) December 5, 2018
Oh snap. Let me step aside the much-mentioned “scornful-jealously” tone of this OPINION piece.
No doubt the marriage is PR. But girlfriend is pointing out Priyanka is a high-maintenance, social climbing opportunist: in other words, your daily Hollywood!— Diann D (@DianeDMa1) December 5, 2018
Not only this article makes no point.. It is also Absolutely racist, xenophobic hateful writing by @mRiah ! Shameful that she seems to have an issue that @priyankachopra an Indian is rich and accomplished & splurges her own money.
Sick @nymagPR published this.— Maya (@Sharanyashettyy) December 5, 2018
“All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.” This is really disappointing @TheCut that you platformed this vicious, uninformed piece. https://t.co/6hvtufDJWY— Rituparna Chatterjee (@MasalaBai) December 5, 2018
If this is meant to be satirical or humorous, it has sadly missed the point. Instead it’s just sexist, ageist and culturally ignorant to Priyanka Chopra’s background. https://t.co/fbYwpeBsv5— Piya Sinha-Roy (@PiyaSRoy) December 5, 2018
Agreed. Everyone associated with writing and publishing this article is pic.twitter.com/GO7kIB5PwN— Veronica NaNoWriMo (@WriteRonni) December 5, 2018
Thank you to @mRiah and @TheCut for reminding me that Priyanka Chopra once told me “I like jewelry that is – well, stones that are big, let’s just say. I work very hard to spoil myself." https://t.co/FebQaU2rrO— Alex Apatoff Besen (@Nicefunalex) December 4, 2018
Malicious, hateful opinion pieces like this one on @priyankachopra should especially not find a platform on publications like @TheCut that cater to a large female audience. @NYMag https://t.co/SGYz0u7KSU— Suchismita (@muchishisuta) December 5, 2018
I couldn't even bring myself to complete reading this trash but from what I've read, the author really can't accept the fact that an Indian woman can earn millions and spend it lavishly on herself and her wedding. Also @TheCut this is racist, just fyi!https://t.co/StYajaIjSs— Sreeparna Mazumder (@Sreeep) December 5, 2018
There are so many things about The Cut take down of Priyanka Chopra that I’m like ♀️ but it’s the ending that is just truly bizzare. If anything all this piece does is confirm that the writer has no desi friends bc otherwise she would know our weddings are always extra AF pic.twitter.com/y7BuOaSVxz— Amna (@AGlasgowGirl) December 5, 2018
