The doctor treating Eman Ahmed, world's heaviest woman who was said to have weighed around 500 kgs when she arrived in India, has lashed out at the sister of his patient for claiming that he lied about her losing weight.
The blame game between Ahmed's sister Shaimaa Selim and Dr Muffazal Lakdawala has escalated, with the doctor now claiming that Eman was not, as claimed by her sister, 500 kgs when she arrived in India but 378 kgs.
In a video Shaimaa had accused Dr Muffazal Lakdawala of Saifee Hospital of telling lies about her sister's weight loss surgery, saying she does not talk at all, is not able to move and looks bluish, adding that there is no improvement.
In an interview, Dr Muffazal Lakdwala lashed out Shaimaa for lying to the world about Eman's weight and for wanting indefinite treatment for her sister.
"She has come to India because she was 500 kgs according to the family. Family has unrealistic expectations after they see recovery now they want her to stand and walk. She was in bed for 24 years what were they doing for so long. Now they are talking about completion of treatment, am I a neurologist to treat her other diseases? There have been many false claims," Lakdwala said.
"On February 12 when Eman came to Mumbai, in the press conference I had said that Eman walking is a distant dream. My target was that I have to make her sit and I have achieved that. So it's very distressful to hear things against us who brought Eman to Mumbai from her home where she was left to die. We have made her sit up," he stated.
Q. Where did this figure of 500 kgs come from?
A. We go on trust, if a patient comes and says I have a headache we will believe her. On October 23, 2016, worldwide media had reported her as world's heaviest woman. There is a paper from a doctor in Egypt who said her weight is 500 kgs. When I asked Shaimaa, have you weighed Eman she said we have weighed her on a industrial scale. Now, she denies that. When we got her here we had to get a special bed from Hungary on which up to 550 kgs could be weighed. So the first time Eman Ahmed was weighed on Indian soil was on March 2 and she was 378 kgs. Now she is 176 kgs. So Shaimaa has lied to the world about Eman's weight.
Q. Why is Shaimaa not stating facts?
A. She is lying to get her sister media attention because she is tired of looking after her sister. It is unfortunate if the sister believes that she could fool people all the time. As she cannot go back on the weight issue she has brought the stroke issue.
Q. Her main allegation is that Saifee Hospital is discharging Eman inspite of her not being well. Why are you not keeping her for a longer period of time?
A. We got her here and paid for the whole treatment. After the CT scan we wrote to the Egyptian authority whether you have any neuro rehab facility so that she can recover there. No hospital can keep a patient for indefinite time. She expected too much of free treatment. She has taken advantage of us saying 'atithi Dev bhava'.
Q. Shaimaa alleges Saifee threatened to throw her out?
A. Luckily, Counsel General has been involved in these discussions. We never said we will throw you out. She asked the management to give her in writing that they will keep her for 2 years. That's when the management refused, she then threatened to blackmail and disrepute the hospital, which she did.
Q. What is the status of her epilepsy?
A. She had suffered a stroke three years back after which seizures started. But Shaimaa seems to have more knowledge than doctors. We tried to explain this to her but she kept arguing.
Q. Why was the police called?
A. For three months now we have been feeding her through a tube. Suddenly when she has decided to go to VPS she is giving her water. We have to take precautions. We will be blamed if anything happens to Eman at Saifee. We are happy that VPS is on board.
Q. What will be your piece of advice to VPS Healthcare on Eman's treatment?
A. I will not give any advice. I hope they deliver on what they have promised.
Shaimaa on the other hand, has accepted that she asked the hospital to sign a contract that would allow Eman to stay for two years and receive treatment for free.
On the police being called, Shaimaa said she only fed water to Eman and there was no reason for the authorities to be called. She added that Dr Muffazal Lakdwala had asked her to feed Eman chocolate, so how was she supposed to know that water was not allowed.
On shifting her sister to VPS Healthcare, Shaimaa said she expects that Eman will be able to stand and walk on her own.
