Who saved Chidambaram for so long?

One of the biggest surprises of the last five years of the Modi government was: how did P Chidamabaram manage to not get arrested?

There are a slew of cases of financial impropriety against him and his son Karti is and the money trails to the father and son duo, despite the inevitable red herrings of shell companies and off-shore investments in tax havens, are well established.

It was no secret in New Delhi that Chidambaram's son, who had established for himself the notoriety of being snooty, brusque and cavalier, was running a parallel empire and was lording over many shady deals that ran into thousands of crores. Karti, it was rumoured, had parked funds in prime properties all over the world and in tax havens.

The moment the NDA government came to power in 2014, it was expected to go after Chidambaram, who had always riled up the BJP supporters with his snobbery.

However, despite the many lawsuits against him and his son, Chidambaram managed to escape. Though his son went behind the bars for 22 days, how did Chidambaram remain scot-free? Even the supporters of BJP never hid the fact that Chidambaram was constantly being saved by a powerful Minister in Modi's Cabinet. Said person is not part of the Modi's current team.

On social media, maverick BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who has been unrelenting in his campaign against Chidambaram, had openly taken the name of this former BJP Minister who repeatedly saved Chidambaram.

So when the NDA government took office again in May and that particular Minister was not in the Cabinet, it became pretty evident that Chidambaram's charmed existence was bound to end shortly.

And when Chidambaram's anticipatory bail was declined yesterday, everybody hoped that it was only a matter of time before the canny Chettiar was arrested.

That he managed to stay incommunicado from late afternoon yesterday makes it clear that Chidambaram still has someone helping him from the inside. It beggars belief that a former Home and Finance Minister's whereabouts were untraceable for the authorities. Chidambaram has government security cover. It is inconceivable that he gave his security the slip and go totally underground. Is some invisible force still saving Chidambaram? After all, the former Finance Minister, with all his riches, can buy support from any quarter.

In any case, this morning's developments at the Supreme Court have not gone Chidambaram's way. The matter has now gone to the Chief Justice's domain. So is the past finally catching up with the suave politico?

Many BJP folks were unhappy that in the first stint of the Modi government did not go all-out against the likes of Chidambaram, Robert Vadra and also liberal darling Shashi Tharoor.

With Chidambaram now on the threshold of arrest, the question is: will Vadra be next?
