A TikTok video has sparked a debate about where exactly dishwasher tablets should be placed in the machine.
In the clip, shared to the video sharing platform, user Scott Jeffreys demonstrates that he now puts the dishwasher tablet in the smaller section of the dispenser instead of the larger, recommended section.
“Who knew? I’ve been doing it wrong forever,” the text on the video reads as Jeffreys demonstrates how easily the tablet fits in the smaller compartment.
Since the video was shared, it has clocked up more than 3.7 million views and received thousands of comments from people confused about the revelation and debating where you should put the tablets in the dishwasher.
Some people admitted they hadn’t known putting the tablet in the smaller compartment was an option.
“Looks like I have been doing it wrong, wonder why my dishes are not clean,” one person wrote while another added: “Wait I’ve been doing it wrong too.”
But others were less convinced Jeffreys had found the correct place for the tablet to go.
“That’s totally wrong, you had it right the first time,” one user commented.
“Not sure that’s true for all, I used a different brand and it told me to put it in the main part. But I did have to check after I watched,” another added.
“After seeing this I had to check the manual. Unfortunately you’re wrong. It’s for the pre-clean program,” another person wrote.
Others controversially claimed you could just go ahead and forgo all the compartments and just chuck the tablet in the bottom of the machine.
“You don’t have to put the tablet in there as that little door opens during the cycle anyway so you could throw the tablet anywhere in the dishwasher,” one user suggested.
“It doesn’t matter the holder pops open and dumps it in the bottom of the dishwasher,” another agreed.

So what’s the truth? Where should we be putting the tablets in our dishwashers?
“To get the most out of your machine, we would recommend placing your dishwasher tablet into the main dispenser detailed in the user manual, and always ensure that it is snapped shut before starting the cleaning cycle,” an AO.com spokesperson told Yahoo UK.
The expert also cleared up the confusion over whether you need to actually place the tablet in the compartment or can just toss it in the bottom.
“When you place the tablet in the dispenser, the door stays closed during the first rinse, protecting the tablet from dissolving too quickly,” the expert adds.
“When the second cycle begins, the dispenser door will open, and it is at this stage that the water begins to dissolve the tablet.”
Though putting the tablet in the wrong part of your machine shouldn’t actually damage it, you may well be left with unclean plates.
“Placing the tablet in the incorrect area of your dishwasher means that the tablet might be released into the water too early, leaving your dishes dirty,” the spokesperson adds.
Now if we could just solve the dilemma about whether to put the cutlery face up or face down, we’d have our dishwasher etiquette down.
