WhatsApp users in India affected with ‘obsolete’ error, here’s how to fix it

A little WhatsApp-related chaos has taken place this weekend. As of January 13, on opening WhatsApp, some users have been receiving a notification which says that their app has now gone “obsolete”. While a handful of people reportedly received such a notification, around the first week of January, the problem seems to have escalated since this weekend.

BGR India reached out to WhatsApp about the issue, and we were told that “this is an issue that’s being fixed. It was a problem with how our [WhatsApp] app is distributed, which is not under our control.”

We also received a similar message on one of our device, where WhatsApp welcomed us with the message that read, “This version of WhatsApp became obsolete on 13 Jan, 2018. Please go to the Google Play Store and download the latest version”. However, when you head to the Play Store, you are not able to run any download because there are no updates available. And so the trick is to, uninstall the app and then download it again, and then it works just fine.



If you have your data backed up, you can download all of it again, and start using the app where you left off. And if you don’t have any backup, then you’d need to start afresh.


Strangely, the app also claims that the user is on a beta testing program and offers an option to leave the program. However, when you tap on the opt-out button it does nothing.

Apparently, the problem is being most widely reported with Xiaomi smartphones. Even the device we noticed the notification on, was a Mi 4. This is, however, not to say that the issue is occuring with every Xiaomi device.

Do note, while for re-installing did the magic, but some users apparently claim that for them WhatsApp wasn’t working even after uninstalling and re-installing the app.
