Black ink was thrown today at a statue of the first prime minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru in West Bengal's Katwa.

Police reached the Telephone Maidan in Katwa where black ink was thrown at the statue of Nehru and it was later cleaned.

The incident comes after many instances of busts or statues of tall leaders being defaced or vandalised.

After the Assembly election results were announced in Tripura earlier this month, a statue of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, was brought down by a crowd using a JCB following which several incidents of statues being vandalised sprung.

On Friday, busts of Chief Ministers and iconic Dravidian figures CN Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and Dravidar Kazhagam founder EV Ramasamy Naicker (Periyar) were found defaced and adorned with saffron cloth in Namakkal district.

On March 7, Periyar's statue in Vellore district's Tirupattur was defaced by two people after BJP National Secretary H Raja put out a controversial Facebook post which said: "Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India? What connection has India with Communists? Lenin's statue has been removed in Tripura. Today it is Lenin's statue in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of caste fanatic EVR Ramasamy".

On the same day, an idol of Dr BR Ambedkar was vandalised in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut town.

On March 8, an idol of Mahatma Gandhi in Kerala's Kannur district and a bust of Baba Ambedkar in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvotriyur Periyar Nagar were found disgraced.
