Water crisis hit over 40 villages as electricity board disconnects supply

Around 47 villages in Amritsar are facing drinking water shortage after the Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited disconnected electricity supply to tubewells due to nonpayment of bills by Water and Sanitation Department. Villagers of Nayabpura Gurbhej Singh alleged that they are facing water scarcity despite clearance of all dues. They said that they are going faraway places to fetch water. Pardeep Kumar Saini, Suburban Circle Deputy Chief Engineer, Amritsar. The department had disconnected their water connections since the water supply and sanitation has not paid the bills. "We are disconnecting all the water connections whose bills had not been paid. We have to clear our dues before the end of financial year, and from 15th Feb to 3rd March, it is a routine practice." The villagers alleged that life has become miserable. They said a poor man who survives on daily wages of Rs 300 is unable to go to earn money for his family as he utilizes most of the time to arrange water.
