A video footage released by the hospital showed a grieving man assaulting a doctor, who tried explaining the situation to them, in the presence of several people and a police personnel.

The husband of a 33-year-old woman, who died after childbirth at a private hospital in Kolkata, allegedly slapped a doctor, accusing the hospital of medical negligence.

The woman’s relatives claimed that they got a call from the hospital — Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) — around 3 am on Thursday, informing them that her condition was critical, hours after doctors performed c-section for the delivery. “By the time we reached the hospital, she had died. How come a woman who gave birth by caesarean section die at a reputed hospital? She was alright after giving birth,” said a relative.

According to sources, gynaecologist Dr Basav Mukherjee was trying to explain the relatives about the situation when the husband of the woman got up from his seat and slapped the doctor. In the CCTV footage that was shared by the hospital and aired by television news channels, a man is seen sitting on a sofa amid the talks between the doctor and the relatives of the woman, when he suddenly gets up and slap the doctor in the presence of other hospital staff.
Following a commotion between the woman’s relatives and the hospital staff, police were called.

“The doctor tried to explain the unfortunate incident to the family and advised for a post mortem. Despite that the family members in anger and rage not only abused the doctor but also assaulted him and created havoc in the hospital premises,” the CMRI said in a statement.

“We express our condolences to the family. However, physical violence is unacceptable,” it added.

The woman’s family, however, accused the hospital of medical negligence and filed a complaint with the police against the hospital.

A relative of the woman, while talking to TV channels, said, “We will not seek any compensation, but take the legal route... We will also approach the West Bengal Medical Council,” she added.

The CMRI is also considering to file a counter-complaint with the police against the family, sources said.
