WATCH: Srinagar receives season’s first snowfall, vehicular traffic between Jammu and Srinagar suspended

A day after the tourist hotspot of Gulmarg witnessed season's first snowfall, Srinagar found itself wrapped under snow Thursday as it welcomed this winter's first snowfall.

The winter chill has set in early this year in Kashmir as Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night's 5.4 degrees Celsius, a drop of six notches.

Vehicular traffic between Jammu and Srinagar was suspended on Thursday as the region witnessed incessant rains coupled with season’s first snowfall during the day.

Sources said that Mughal road in Poonch and Nathatop in Udhampur district witnessed season’s first snowfall resulting in considerable fall in day’s temperature. According to locals, nearly two inch of snow had accumulated there till reports last came in, bringing cheers among hoteliers and all those associated with tourism at nearby Patnitop, Kud and Batote areas.

Meanwhile, incessant rains continued to lash the Jammu region leading to the suspension of vehicular traffic between Jammu and Srinagar due to the slippery condition of the road beyond Banihal town. However, local traffic was allowed to ply on all roads across the Jammu region.

Over 2000 vehicles are reported to be stranded on the highway due to the closure.

"A call on afternoon flights will be taken only after reassessing the weather situation," the official from the Airport Authority of India was quoted as saying.

Gulmarg was the coldest place in the newly formed union territory, recording a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius while other weather stations also recorded a minimum temperature hovering around the freezing point, the MET department official said.

Meanwhile, Solang in Himachal Pradesh also received snowfall Thursday morning.
