Sasikala returned to Tamil Nadu after spending 4 years in prison in a disproportionate assets case. She was released from prison on January 27, but spent some days in a Bengaluru hospital for Covid-19 treatment. She was greeted by a sea of supporters, turning the 6-hour journey from Bengaluru to Chennai into almost a day-long affair. Sasikala, a close aide of late Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa, was ousted from the AIADMK in 2017. Her attempt to become the CM was foiled by conviction in the assets case.
