The Tirunelveli district police officials are carrying out further investigation.

An elderly couple in Kalyanipuram village near Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu fought off two masked robbers who tried to strangle them Sunday night. CCTV footage of the couple fending off the masked intruders with slippers, plastic stools, chairs, and buckets went viral on social media.

In the video, Shanmugavel is seen sitting on a chair outside his farmhouse when one of the intruders is seen sneaking up on him. When Shanmugavel reaches out to pick up a piece of paper placed on the table, the masked man pulls the elderly man back and attempts to choke him with a cloth. Shanmugavel tries to escape from the intruders’ lock and shouts for help. His wife Senthamarai opens the door of the house and rushes to help her husband when a second masked man appears.

The footage showed Senthamarai immediately attacking the robbers with slippers and other items as Shanmugavel breaks free from the intruder s grip and joins his wife in fighting them with stools, chairs and other items. The thieves are seen armed with machetes and sickles. The struggle came to an end after the two burglaries fled the spot.

Senthamarai, unperplexed by Sunday’s incident says she has always been bold since her young age. Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Senthamarai says she was more determined to capture the intruders rather than safeguarding herself.

"We have been living in this farmhouse for 40 years, we haven’t come across anything like this. On Sunday, I was speaking with my younger son till 9.30 pm. Suddenly I heard my husband’s voice and saw the burglars attacking him. I came out and threw whatever I found at them. When I tried to push one of the thieves down with a chair, I sustained a cut in my hand. We chased them but they ran away quickly. After returning to the house only I found that I lost my gold thali to the culprits," she said.

Senthamarai was later taken to the Tenkasi government hospital by her relatives for first-aid. She says the police reached her house within 20 minutes after the incident took place. "The police co-operated with us fully and helped us recover from the shocking incident. They have been searching in all the nearby areas and have been safeguarding us throughout the day. They have assured us that they will capture the criminals within a few days."

Shanmugavel (75) is a lemon wholesale dealer and Senthamarai (60) is a housewife.
