Days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath renamed the ‘Viklang Kalyan Vibhag’ (Handicap Welfare Department), the Divyang Jan Shasaktikaran Vibhag (Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities), Satyadev Pachauri, a UP Cabinet Minister, was seen passing derogatory remarks at a disabled worker at the BJP office in Lucknow.
In the video, the minister is seen asking him what time he came. He then turned to his party members and asked them:
Yeh kya loole langdo ko rakha hai (You have hired a disabled person to work).
He then points towards the employee and asks:
Dekho, safai kya kargea bataiye mujhe? Tabhi yeh halat hai safai ki (Tell me, how do you expect him to clean? This is why the state of is cleanliness is so poor).
Though Pachauri later claimed that the employee in question was ‘weak’ and not ‘disabled’, it contradicts his earlier statement where he called him a loola langda or disabled person.
In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had advocated for the term divyang (divine body) to replace the term viklang (disabled) in public offices.
