Vishal Bhardwaj to Direct-Produce Netflix’s ‘Midnight’s Children’

Based on the Salman Rushdie novel that won the ‘best of Booker’ on the 40th anniversary of the Booker Prize, the classic Midnight’s Children will now be made into a Netflix original series. Netflix took to twitter to announce that Vishal Bhardwaj would execute this project.

Midnight’s Children is a 1981 novel that follows the life of Saleem Sinai, born at the stroke of midnight on 15 August 15, 1947, even as the destiny of the new country plays out. As Rushdie described it himself, Midnight’s Children is “chutnification of history” .

Simran Sethi, the director of international originals for Netflix, said:

" “We couldn’t have imagined anyone other than Vishal Bhardwaj as the showrunner on this series and are honoured that he will steer the project.”" - Simran Sethi, director of international originals, Netflix

Vishal Bhardwaj, who is extremely excited about this project, said:

"“The opportunity to translate one of the greatest works of literature in a medium that is accessible to millions of people around the world is incredible, and I’m delighted to partner with Netflix in bringing Midnight’s Children to life onscreen. I’m confident that taking this quintessentially Indian epic that transcends generations and genres, combined with the production values and creative freedom that Netflix offers, will contribute to an unforgettable series that is Indian at heart and global in reach.”" - Vishal Bhardwaj

Bhardwaj is best known for his films Maqbool, Omkara and Haider, adaptations of the famous Shakespeare plays, Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet. Bhardwaj is the recipient of seven prestigious National Film Awards.
