Vinod Khanna death hoax gets Meghalaya BJP foxed: Party observes silence after rumours of actor’s health surface; backtracks later

BJP's state general secretary David Kharsati on Saturday evening had called a meeting where he asked his party members to hold a two-minute silence to pay respect to the "departed soul" of Vinod Khanna.

Shillong, April 8: As rumours on actor Vinod Khanna is doing the rounds on social media, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya landed themselves in an awkward situation on Saturday evening and went ahead to observe a two-minutes silence. Several BJP leaders can be seen in a viral image observing silence where they also reportedly prayed and marked their tribute to the “departed soul” of Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna. Moments after BJP’s unit in Meghalaya was criticised for following social media rumours, a clarification was issued from the party’s state headquarter. Vinod Khanna is a former BJP Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur district in Punjab and was recently admitted to the hospital following an illness.

“Faux pas by Meghalaya BJP; they observed silence after rumours of Vinod Khanna’s death surfaced,” news agency ANI tweeted. Moments after the picture and a video of BJP leaders from Meghalaya observing silence went viral on social media, party’s state unit clarified saying that, “Among misleading reports that Vinod Khanna is no more, we clarify as per latest reports he is responding well to treatment”.

According to reports, BJP’s state general secretary David Kharsati on Saturday evening had called a meeting. Before holding the meeting, Kharsati asked his party members to hold a two-minute silence to pay respect to the “departed soul” of Vinod Khanna. However, in few minutes the video and images shared by BJP leaders went viral on social media and withing minutes after the incident the BJP state unit had to issue a clarification on the matter.

Kharsati further clarified the awkward situation in which he and his party leaders were trapped and said, “Two of our party workers saw a TV news and informed us about his demise and we believed them without verifying the news. We have already issued a statement apologising for the grave mistake that was done from our side. Please cooperate.”


A picture of veteran actor Vinod Khanna, who has been admitted at a Mumbai hospital, are doing the rounds on social media. In the picture, Vinod Khanna looked frail and thin and the same image had sparked off the rumours about his death. Last week on Sunday, Vinod Khanna was admitted to a hospital, due to severe dehydration and his eldest son and Bollywood actor Rahul Khanna had also confirmed the same.
