Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi reports birth of only boys in last 3 months

The district administration of Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand got alarmed after it was reported that its 133 villages saw births of only boys in the period of last three months, and that there was a strong possibility of large scale female infanticide cases. Kalpana Thakur, a social activist working in Uttarkashi said that around 216 babies were born in 133 villages of the district in the last three months, however, none of the 216 were girls, and asked whether government's save girl child campaign was just a farce. "In last 3 months, there have been cases in District where number of birth of girls has been zero or in some cases in single digits. Areas are being identified, and a detailed survey and study to be conducted to ascertain reasons behind it," said Dr Ashish Chauhan, District Magistrate, Uttarkashi.
