Supporters of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani protested against his arrest and took to the streets while pelting stones at security personnel, in Jammu and Kashmir. Police arrested Gilani soon after he landed at the Srinagar airport and was later put under house arrest. Some supporters were also arrested for protesting and defying curfew regulations in place across the valley in wake of the killing of a youth in firing allegedly by the security forces in Baramulla district. Hundreds of paramilitary forces and local police were deployed to the region, which is prone to separatist violence. Shops remained closed, along with most schools, and daily activities were subjected to severe disruption.
