The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed a much awaited anti-rape law in wake of public outcry, following the Delhi gang rape and its victim's death. The Rajya Sabha cleared the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill that provides stringent punishment for rape and other sexual crimes against women after it got the nod of Lok Sabha in New Delhi. Law Minister Ashwani Kumar lauded the passage of the bill. However, the BJP has sought more measures to tackle crime against women. The law mandates 20 years in prison for rape and even death sentence in extreme cases. It also punishes acid attacks, stalking, voyeurism and trafficking of women. It has increased the age of sexual consent for girls from 16 years to 18 years.
