Protesters hog to back poet Vairamuthu facing criticism over 'sacrilegious' remark

Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam's (TPDK) members stuffed their faces with food in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore in a unique counter protest on Friday. TPDK members were protesting a hunger strike by a spiritual leader over allegedly derogatory remarks by a fellow TPDK member and Tamil poet Vairamuthu about a Hindu goddess. Vairamuthu landed in a soup after he referred to goddess Andal as a 'dasi' (servant) in his essay. Spiritual leader of Srivilliputhur Andal temple, Sadagopa Ramanuja Jeeyar, has been on a hunger strike against the remark. Vairamuthu has maintained that the controversial line was not his and that he had quoted an American researcher's argument and expressed regret if his essay "hurt anyone's sentiments". The editor of the Tamil daily that published Vairamuthu's essay also met Jeeyar to tender his apology, which was eventually accepted.
