Jallikattu row: Police baton charge protesters, 30 people detained

Police baton charged people protesting against the ban on Jallikattu in Avanivapuram in Madurai on Saturday. Thirty people have been detained. More details are awaited. Jallikattu is a traditional event involving the hugging or embracing of a bull to ward off evil spirits and ensure the well being of the public. It is held in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal (harvest) celebrations on Maatu Pongal day; the second day of the Tamil month.
