Heavy snowfall hampered operations to clear snow around Kedarnath temple to resume reconstruction work. District Magistrate of Rudraprayag district, Mangesh Gildhiyal, said 2.5-ft thick layer of snow had accumulated due to heavy snowfall over the last two-three days. Bulldozers were pressed into service to clear the roads leading to the shrine and labourers used shovels clear snow on slopes. Every year, the temple shuts down for six months in winter, when snow cuts-off roads and temperatures dip to sub-zero levels, and opens for public in summer. This winter break, authorities are busy with the reconstruction work, which began after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in October.
