The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered three-phased panchayat polls to be held in the state by July 15. The state government had appealed against the High Court's order last Friday which said that the state government's announcement of dates for the panchayat polls was illegal. The state had been initially demanding a one-phase poll in December and January which the State Election Commission (SEC) turned down for several reasons such as revision of electoral rolls. Thereafter the board exams came. The state then toned down and demanded a two phase poll. On March 22 it unilaterally came up with two dates - April 26 and April 30.
