Bollywood has always been considered a male-oriented industry, but with the passage of time, it is no more an alien world for women directors. Well, this revolution is not only confined to today's era, but started long back in the1920's when Fatma Begum broke the male director's legacy and entered the world of direction with movie "Bulbul-e-Paristan". And, now we have many females like her who have carved a niche for themselves in this male-dominated field of direction. Mira Nair, Farah Khan, Zoya Akhtar, Deepa Mehta, Kiran Rao, Reema Kagti, Pooja Bhatt and Gauri Shinde are few of the best female directors who have made their mark as of date. Lights, camera, and action! Earlier, whenever we used to hear those three words, we automatically used to think of prolific men wielding their microphones behind the camera. But with the success of movies like Main Hoon Na, Dhobi Ghat, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which have been directed by females, now women are more confident of working behind the camera and calling the shots.
