Veteran Kerala Congress leader KM Mani dies at 86
Karingozhakkal Mani Mani better known as KM Mani, Chairman of Kerala Congress (Mani) Group passed away in Kochi on Tuesday. The 86-year-old was on ventilator after he was admitted to the hospital with a pulmonary infection.
Mani was a political power horse in Kerala for almost 50 years and represented Pala, a catholic-dominated constituency in Kottayam district, since 1965. He is one of the founding members of Kerala Congress and regarded as the most intelligent politician in Kerala.Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited KM Mani at Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi after he was put on ventilator.
A lawyer by profession, Mani was district Congress Committee secretary in Kottayam in 1960 and formed Kerala Congress along with PT Chacko and KM George. His party, Kerala Congress, split into many factions with its presence in UDF, LDF and NDA.
After the bar bribery case, KM Mani lost his political clout and his party could win only six assembly seats in 2016 polls.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of the veteran leader and praised his contribution towards Kerala.
He is survived by his wife, five daughters and son Jose K. Mani, member of Rajya Sabha.
