Uttarakhand floods: 26 bodies recovered, 171 missing; rescue operations underway

27 individuals were rescued alive by the State Emergency Operation Centre, i.e. 12 from the smaller of the two tunnels at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project site and 15 from the Rishi Ganga site, respectively.

The toll caused by the glacier burst in the Uttarkhand tragedy has increased to 26, with more bodies being retrieved, while 171 people are still missing. Officials at the State Emergency Operation Centre announced that more bodies were being retrieved and feared that the toll would increase a day after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier could have burst through its banks in the district of Chamoli.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged his government's support for the citizens of the state to a delegation of Uttarakhand MPs and said it is working to improve the infrastructure there to deal with any natural disaster in the future.
