UP Civic Elections 2017: Declared ‘Dead’ by Many, 95-year-old Casts Vote in Purania Aliganj
Lucknow, Nov 21: Polling for the first phase of elections to urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh will be held on Wednesday amid tight security. The campaigning for the first phase of local body elections ended on Monday. Polling would be held from 7 am to 5 pm in 24 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Polling in the other two phases would be held on November 26 and 29, while the results will be declared on December 1.
In the first phase of elections to urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh, polling will be held in Shamli, Meerut, Hapur, Bijnore, Badaun, Hathras, Kasganj, Agra, Kanpur, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Unnao, Hardoi, Amethi, Faizabad, Gonda, Basti, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Ghazipur and Sonebhadra district. A total of 230 local bodies will go to polls in the first phase, which includes 4,095 wards.
Five municipal corporations, 71 Nagar Palika Parishads and 154 Nagar Panchayats will go to polls in the first phase of elections. The five municipal corporations, including Gorakhpur Nagar Nigam, spread over 430 wards. Similarly, elections will be held in 1,819 wards under 71 municipalities and 1,846 wards in 152 Nagar panchayats. A total of 56 candidates are in the fray for five mayor seats, 901 for the chairperson post in the 71 Nagar Palikas and 3856 candidates for the 1819 Nagar Palika wards.
All major parties – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) – are contesting urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh. The results assume significance of Chief Minister Yogi Adhiyath as it would indicate whether he has been able to ensure that the BJP continues to maintain its popularity level after its landslide victory in the state.
