Section 144 was placed in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday before Kisan Mahapanchayat. An order was released by District Magistrate Saharanpur citing various reasons, including upcoming festivities, the spread of the pandemic of COVID-19 and the threat of violence by the state's anti-social elements. The limitations were implemented until 5 April.
The move comes ahead of the visit of Congress Secretary-General Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who was all set to attend the Mahapanchayat Kisan. Before joining the programme, she was going to Saharanpur to attend Kisan mahapanchayat and was also scheduled to give prayers at Shakumbhra Devi Temple. The leader of Congress is also scheduled to hold a dialogue with farmers in the districts of Bijnor and Muzaffarnagar on 13 February.
