Uttar Pradesh Municipal Elections 2017: AAP to Contest UP Civic Polls With Focus on Varanasi, Gorakhpur
Lucknow, Oct 17: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is all set to contest municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh. Vaibhav Maheshwari, a spokesperson of AAP’s Uttar Pradesh unit, said the party will focus on Varanasi and Gorakhpur districts in the municipal election. The AAP is planning to field its candidates in 16 civic bodies across Uttar Pradesh, Maheswari said.
During the campaigning, the AAP will go to voters with the promise of construction of toilets for women in markets. “Women often face problems because due to the absence of toilets in markets. If AAP comes to power, we will build toilets for women in markets,” AAP leader Vaibhav Maheshwari said. The AAP will also promise to improve the infrastructure and education level of government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh.
“Before AAP came to power in Delhi, the education system of government-run schools was at a low level. The education system has been improved after AAP formed the government in the national capital. The same will be replicated in Uttar Pradesh,” Maheshwari said. The party will also reduce the house tax if voted to power, the AAP leader added.
The AAP will focus on Varanasi, from where party chief Arvind Kejriwal unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha polls against Narendra Modi, and Gorakhpur, which is the home turf of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. 16 civic bodies will go to polls in November this year. Elections will be held in 198 Palika Parishad and 439 panchayats.
