Upset wins for Allen, Anurag

Guwahati, Nov. 19: Unseeded Allen Koundan of India caused an upset, getting the better of seventh seed compatriot Tushar Mandlekar 6-3, 6-1 in the under-18 boys' singles on the inaugural day of the ITF Junior World Ranking Tennis Tournament for under-18 boys and girls at the All-Assam Tennis Association complex in Chachal here today.

In another upset, unseeded Anurag Nenwani of India shocked eighth seed compatriot Vijay Jude Raymond 6-1, 6-2 in the same event.

The other seeds, however, sailed smoothly into the boys' pre-quarterfinals. The top six seeds in boys' courts are Kumara P. Saradhi Adavelly (India), Chih-Chun Tang (Chinese Taipei), Anvit Bendre (India), Gary Tokas (India), Shashank Nautiyal (India) and Fatehdeep Singh (India).

Wildcard entry local lad Amlanjyoti Baruah of India went down to Gagan Sharma after a gruelling fight for two-and-a-half hours where the latter won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Home girl Suranjeta Saikia also advanced to under-18 girls' pre-quarterfinals with a win over compatriot Davina Chhabra 6-2, 6-1.

The top eight seeds in the girls' singles are Ann Nilsson (Germany), Sai Chamarthi (India), Khee Yen Wee (Singapore), Nehel Sahni (India), Ee Yi Olivia Koh (Singapore), Priyana Kalita (India), Yuchia Chen (Chinese Taipei) and Trisha Punamiya (India).
