Union Budget: All India Mahila Congress thanks Sonia for security, protection of women

New Delhi, Mar. 2 (ANI): A delegation of the All India Mahila Congress called on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi here on Saturday and expressed its gratitude for the historic decision taken to make the feminine gender economically strong and make them feel that they have their own women bank in which they will be able to carry on their financial transaction.

The women delegation also thanked the Congress President for the decision taken in Union Budget 2013-14 for security and protection of the women

All India Mahila Congress President Anita Verma said the women in the country have been able to reach new milestones in creating a new awareness amongst them under the dynamic leadership of Sonia Gandhi during the last decade.

The country is all set to get an all-women bank by this year with the government announcing an initial capital of Rs 1,000 crore for the purpose.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who announced the budget proposal for 2013-14 in Parliament on February 28, said women were at the head of many banks today, including two public sector banks, but there was no bank that exclusively served women.

"Can we have a bank that lends mostly to women and women-run businesses, that supports women Self Help Groups and women's livelihood, that employs predominantly women, and that addresses gender related aspects of empowerment and financial inclusion? I think we can," he said, as he announced setting up of the country's first women's bank. (ANI)
