Two killed, 15 injured as earthmover runs into procession near Pune

Two people were killed and at least 15 injured after an earthmover ran into a Dindi or a procession of Warkaris in Dive Ghat area near Pune Tuesday morning. One of deceased was a descendent of 14th century saint poet Sant Namdeo.

The accident took place 20 kilometres away from Pune city around 9 am when a Dindi procession of Warkaris was on its way to Alandi in Pune district from Pandharpur in Solapur district as part of the centuries old tradition.

The deceased have been identified as Sopan Maharaj Namdas (36) and Atul Mahadev Alshi (24).

Inspector Suraj Bandgar from Pune rural police said, "An earthmover vehicles ran over several people in the procession. Two persons were killed and 15 more have sustained injuries. The brakes of the earthmover vehicle had reportedly failed. We are verifying it. Meanwhile, we have detained the driver."

After the accident, the injured were rushed to a hospital where two of them were declared brought dead. At least eight of the 15 injured are being treated and seven others were discharged after primary treatment.
