Tsunami hits Japan after powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake (Update: Japan earthquake)

London, Dec 7 (ANI): A one metre-high tsunami has hit northeast Japan after a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast that was devastated in last year's disaster.

Meteorologists said the wave swept ashore at just after 6 pm local time in Ishinomaki, a city badly hit by the 2011 tsunami that wrecked a large swathe of the northeast coast, killing thousands.

According to the United States Geological Survey, there were no immediate reports of any fatalities after the 7.3-magnitude quake that was followed by a 6.2 aftershock, Gulf News reports.

The 7.3 quake struck 36 kilometres under the Pacific, USGS said.

According to the report, the epicentre was 284 kilometres east of Sendai, or 459 kilometres northeast of Tokyo, according to the USGS. (ANI)
