New York [U.S.A], May 1 (ANI): "Let Girls Learn" program, a signature girls' education initiative of the Obama administration, is getting shelved by the Trump administration.
"The "Let Girls Learn" program, which she (Michelle) and (former) president Barack Obama started in 2015 to facilitate educational opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries, will cease operation immediately," the CNN quoted an internal document as saying.
Aspects of 'Let Girls Learn' will continue, although the brand name of the program will no longer be used.
"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the Let Girls Learn brand or maintain a stand-alone program," an email from Peace Corps acting director Sheila Crowley to employees reportedly reads.
The programme started the program in 2015 and aimed to increase educational opportunities for young girls in developing countries.
"'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our Volunteers all over the world," Crowley wrote.
In October last year, the White House announced USD five million in private sector commitments toward the programs administered under the "Let Girls Learn" banner, bringing the total financial pledges to more than $1 billion for programs in 50 countries.
Ivanka Trump, the President's daughter and his senior adviser has said she will make women and girls issues central in her portfolio. (ANI)
