Torreira might be three-foot-nothing but we love him! - Adams

The Uruguayan came in for high praise from the Gunners legend prior to the Premier League game with Manchester United

Tony Adams has spoken out in admiration of Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira following the diminutive midfielder's early impact on the team.

The 5’5” Uruguayan has become a firm favourite with the Gunners’ faithful since completing a £27 million move to the Emirates from Sampdoria over the summer.

The South American has failed to feature in just two of Arsenal’s games so far this campaign, and managed to score his first goal with the final strike in Sunday’s 4-2 North London derby victory over Spurs.

Arsenal legend Adams is amongst those who have fallen for Torreira’s charms, and was quick to single him out for praise prior to the Gunners’ clash with Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Speaking as a pundit on BT Sport, he said: “I’ve been talking to the recruitment boys for a long while now. It’s obvious we needed a goalkeeper, we needed a decent back four, and we need somebody in front of the back four to protect them, and we’ve got one at long last.

“He may be three-foot-nothing but it’s a start and we love him. He’s a fan favourite because he gives everything and he looks like he really wants to play for Arsenal, and that’s all the fans want at the end of the day.”

Torreira also impressed during the summer while on international duty with Uruguay at the World Cup in Russia, helping his side to win all three of their group matches and eliminate European champions Portugal before eventually crashing out at the hands of eventual winners France.

The midfielder started against United in Unai Emery’s first visit to Old Trafford as Arsenal manager, the first time they have made the journey north without Arsene Wenger at the helm since 1996.

The Gunners will be hoping for better fortune than they have enjoyed against the Red Devils in recent times, having won just three of their previous 19 meetings with their old rivals. They also lost both clashes between the two sides last season, with the most recent fixture being settled by a 91st minute Marouane Fellaini winner back in April.
