Top seeds advance in national tennis

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IANS) Top seeds had it easy on the opening day of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship here Monday.

Men's top seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan began his campaign in style with a straight-sets win over Vijay Kannan to enter the second round while Delhi girl Tarranum Handa also advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Abhilasha Ahuja.

Jeevan dispatched Kannan 6-2, 6-2 at the R.K.Khanna Tennis Complex while second seed V.M.Ranjeet also entered the second round after his opponent Rajat Maheshwari retired when Ranjeet was leading 6-0.

Seventh seed Abhijit Tiwari was the biggest casualty on the opening day with Tejas Chaukalkar knocking him out. Tejas stunned the Maharashtra lad with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Mohit Mayur Jayprakash defeated eighth seed Chandril Sood in straight sets to make his way into the second round. The Tamil Nadu player emerged victorious with a 6-2, 7-5 win.

In the women's singles, there were hardly any upsets with all the seeded players advancing into the next stage.

Third seed Natasha Palha booked a second-round clash with Damini Sharma. While Natasha had it easy against Amrita Mukherjee (6-1, 6-3), Damini was stretched to the limit before she finally managed to get past Manya Nagpal with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Fifth seed Eettee Mehta set up a second round clash with Sonal Phadke. Eettee had little trouble to subside Natallia's challenge and went into the next round with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win.

Sonal also made it to the second round after Anushka Bhargava retired from the match in the third set. When Anushka retired, the match was locked at one-set all and Sonal leading 3-2 in the third set.
