Top IPL cricketers who might retire after the 2021 season

The 2021 IPL auction is over, and the schedule is out. But the excitement is curtailed by the heartbreaking news of some of the League stars’ possible retirement. The short format game has won fan following and team favourites, and this may be the last season to watch these legends in action. Here are the top 5 players who might retire after this year’s IPL:

MS Dhoni - 2008-2021

The captain of Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni, has won the IPL trophy thrice. The keeper is known for his lightning speed behind the wickets and his pyrotechnics with the bat is well documented. He debuted in the IPL maiden season and has played over 204 matches so far with 4632 runs.

Having retired from international cricket in August 2020, at 39 years of age, Dhoni did show signs of decline last season but you never know with the ‘captain cool’. Dhoni can, however, continue his association with CSK as a mentor.

Harbhajan Singh - 2008-2021

An iconic spinner of all-time in Indian cricket, Harbhajan Singh is likely to wave goodbye to IPL cricket after this season. The 38-year-old is set to play for Kolkata Knight Riders this year after stints with Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. With a total of 160 matches, 150 wickets, and 829 runs, Harbhajan will be missed the most on Kolkata ground for his hat-trick against Australia.

Chris Gayle - 2009-2021

The destructive batsman has been among the top run-scorers for Kings XI Punjab and has been a part of the IPL contingent since 2009. With 4772 runs from 132 matches and a record for the highest individual score of 175 runs, the 42-year-old was very productive with the Punjab unit last season but the veteran can only play for so long.

AB de Villiers - 2011-2021

The South African legend is expected to retire from the IPL after the 2021 season. Lovingly called Mr. 360, ABD is known for his attacking style on the pitch. With a total of 169 matches and 4849 runs, and a high score of 133* to his credit, the RCB member is hoping to close his IPL career with a title.

Imran Tahir - 2014-2021

The South African cricketer made his IPL debut in 2014. He has played only 58 matches with a total of 33 runs to his name. But the spin bowler has managed 80 wickets in total. Tahir played a pivotal role in helping Chennai lift the IPL title in 2018. The 41-year-old will be missed for his celebratory display of wickets on the field.
