The 12th season of the Indian Premier League kept fans on their toes with all the exciting updates and happenings. Wins, losses, fifties, hundreds, wickets – fans kept a close look on every single development that happened in the league stage.

Twitter too was buzzing with every update with fans and cricketers sending out congratulatory messages to teams and players doing well while sympathising with those ending up on the losers side.

There were also tweets on popular players across the IPL like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli while fans also had an opinion regarding every controversy that happened during the league stage.

With the playoffs starting from Tuesday, 7 May, here is a look at the top 10 most retweeted tweets from the league stage.

After failing to make it to the playoofs and capping off another disappointing season, Virat Kohli thanked the RCB fans for staying with them through think and thin always and promised to be back better next year.

AB de Villiers also joined in with Kohli in echoing the sentiment on behalf of the franchise . The RCB fans stood by their team with all loyalty and belief in their team. Every Bangalore victory was cheered by the fans, while they stood by their team despite a string of losses.

Bangalore finished last on the points table with 11 points this season.

MS Dhoni is one of the most humble cricketers around and this tweet proves why. Despite losing the game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium, Dhoni was generous enough to meet an old lady who claimed herself to be one of his biggest fans. Not only that, Dhoni also clicked a photo with the old lady besides spending a moment talking to her as well.

Though Chennai lost the game that night, MS Dhoni’s gesture won many hearts and proved why he is respected worldwide.

Chasing 152 needed for victory against Rajasthan Royals, MS Dhoni scored 58 and was dismissed by Ben Stokes in the final over of their innings with Chennai needing 18 to win. There was huge drama in the final over after a no-ball was not given by the on-field umpires which prompted MS Dhoni to rush onto the ground as the cricket fans for once, saw his angry side.

As it turned out he was fined for showing dissent on the field, but the fans were happy as after everything that happened Chennai ended up winning the game.

Fans of KKR and CSK were at war after Chennai’s head coach Stephen Fleming said that as a team they cannot only focus on Andre Russell. As far as the match was concerned, KKR lost the match despite Russell scoring a fifty.

Playing his very first season with Chennai Super Kings, Harbhajan Singh seemed to have also spent time learning Tamil amid the busy tournament. He even tweeted something in the language which made Twitterati take notice, and it became instantly viral on the internet.

One of the classic games of the season was the game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru. MS Dhoni was at his lethal best as he scored an unbeaten 81 – his highest unbeaten score but failed to take CSK home.

With 26 needed off the last over, Dhoni smacked 25 off Umesh Yadav but was dismissed in the final ball of the match in what could arguably be said as the match of the tournament so far.

While MS Dhoni was winning matches for his team with his willow on the field, his daughter Ziva was winning hearts with the way she was cheering for ‘Daddy Dhoni’ off the field. This video of her saying ‘Go Papa’ in Chennai’s match against Delhi made huge noise on Twitter as it was one of the most retweeted tweets from the league stage.

Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in the reverse fixture. It was an important victory for RCB because it helped keeping them in the hunt for the playoffs back then. And Kohli echoed the same through his tweet which said, ‘Last night it went down to the wire but happy to get the desired result’. RCB fans wished Kohli on his fifth IPL century as his knock helped Bangalore to get one over Kolkata.

When the two respective captains of the Indian cricket and the football teams met, it was surely to be noticed by fans and soon reactions and retweets started pouring in. Bengaluru FC won the Indian Super League earlier this year but unfortunately, RCB could not replicate their success in a game which is no less than a religion in this country and Kohli is no less paramount than god.

Alzarri Joseph created history by registering the best figures ever in IPL history. His 6/12 helped Mumbai Indians bet Sunrisers Hyderabad in a low scoring contest. MI defended 136 and won the game by 40 runs as Joseph’s spell was too hot to handle for the Sunrisers batsmen.

His performance left such an impression that even Sachin Tendulkar, mentor of Mumbai Indians congratulated the youngster and lavished praises on him.
