The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at the Congress on Tuesday, May 18, alleging that the latter was attempting to smear Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reputation by labeling the latest COVID-19 strain as the 'Modi strain'. The Congress, on the other hand, dismissed the allegations as false and said it would file a forgery complaint against BJP leader JP Nadda and his spokesperson Sambit Patra. Sambit Patra also said that Congress's assistance to the poor is more of a public relations stunt aided by supportive journalists and influencers than a heartfelt effort. Meanwhile, other BJP leaders such as Hardeep Singh Puri, JP Nadda, and Smriti Irani joined in the attacks, alleging that the Congress's criticism of the Centra Vista redevelopment project and the lack of oxygen and hospital beds was motivated by "hatred towards India."
