Chennai, Feb 3 (PTI) Tamil Nadu added 514 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday taking the infection count to 8,39,866, while four more fatalities pushed the toll to 12,371, the health department said.
Recoveries outnumbered the new cases with 533 people recovering and the total number of those cured in the state mounted to 8,23,001 a bulletin said.
The number of active cases dropped to 4,494.
The department of public health and preventive medicine said it administered COVID-19 vaccines to 10,476 beneficiaries today and 1,30,943 people, including health workers, have been inoculated since the commencement of the exercise from January 16.
In 465 session sites, 10,476 people were vaccinated (10,313 COVISHIELD and 163 COVAXIN).
Besides covering healthcare professionals in the initial run, from February 1 the government is targeting inoculating frontline workers of various government departments, including police and revenue.
A total of 53,649 samples were tested on Wednesday, taking the total specimens examined to 1,61,76,919.
Chennai's caseload increased to 2,31,711, the maximum among the districts, with 145 people testing positive.
The metropolis also accounted for a little over one-third of the COVID-19 fatalities at 4,111 deaths.
All the four patients who succumbed to the virus were ailing with pre-existing morbidity or chronic illness.
As many as 22 districts in the state reported cases in single digits, while 33 districts reported zero fatalities, the bulletin said.
