Theresa May announced today that she will resign on Friday 7 June.

She inherited a slim majority when she took over as Prime Minister in 2016, but her failure to lead Britain out of the EU ultimately led to her demise.

Her voice cracking, she said it had been ‘the honour of my life’ to serve ‘the country that I love’.

In an emotional speech, Mrs May said she had ‘done her best’ to deliver the result of the EU referendum.
