Tennis Podcast: Kerber’s exit and Federer’s return give Roland Garros lift-off

The Sunday start at Roland Garros can sometimes be a damp squib, but with the return of Roger Federer and defeat for Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, there was plenty for the Tennis Podcast team of Catherine Whitaker (Eurosport, Amazon Prime Video), Matt Roberts and Simon Briggs of Telegraph Sport to discuss at the end of the day.

Kerber’s last two Grand Slam exits have been heavy losses. What keeps happening? Is a worrying trend developing for the three-time Grand Slam champion? Or will this early defeat actually be a blessing in disguise, allowing her time to recover physically and mentally for Wimbledon?

As for Federer, how did he look - tennis and outfit - wise on his return to Roland Garros? The team are unanimous in their praise of his tennis, but they’re less convinced about his fashion choices.

Elsewhere, wins for Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov, Elina Svitolina and Garbine Muguruza are discussed. Why has Muguruza never properly connected with the Spanish public? And will Dimitrov be able to build on today’s five-set victory?

There’s also a preview of Monday’s action. Why might Novak Djokovic struggle against Hubert Hurkacz? What can we expect from Serena Williams? And how will Kyle Edmund and Jo Konta get on?

The Tennis Podcast will be produced daily throughout Roland Garros, in association with The Telegraph.
