Telangana: 7 Workers Killed After Roof of Under-Construction Tunnel Collapses in Rajanna Siricilla
Hyderabad, Sept 20: At least seven workers were killed after the roof of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana’s Rajanna Sircilla district.
The accident occurred at the site of Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, where the ill-fated labourers were working at the boomer machine. An air pocket burst caused the collapse of the granite roof being built inside the tunnel. The roof, which came down, weighed four to five tons, as per reports.
Five among the injured labourers were killed on the spot, whereas, one among the two died en route to the hospital. Among the deceased, three hailed from Chhattisgarh, two from Disha and one each from Bihar and Telangana.
Irrigation Minister Harish Rao instructed the contractor to pay ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased worker’s kin at the earliest. He has also ordered a probe into the incident.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao expressed grief over the incident. He ordered the officials involved in the project to maintain preventive mechanism and ensure no such accident is repeated.
