Superstars Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan differ on Chennai-Salem expressway project
Kamal Haasan reiterated his stance on the Chennai-Salem Expressway. While addressing the media at the Chennai airport, the Makkal Needhi Maiam chief stated this project should be initiated only on public request.
The Chennai-Salem expressway has cause much furore in the state of Tamil Nadu. Environmentalists, activists, farmers and politicians raising their voice against this project, are facing arrests by the police. Naam Tamilar Katchi Chief Seeman was arrested from Salem on Wednesday as he was meeting farmers and talking to them regarding the same issue.
"The project should have been initiated only on request by the public. The government could think of other alternatives that could cause less public outcry to meet its development goals", said Kamal Haasan.
Kamal Haasan had earlier also stated that it was unacceptable to treat anyone talking about the environment as a criminal.
On Sunday, another actor-turned-politician and Kamal's counterpart Rajinikanth expressed his views on this upcoming expressway. While Kamal stands against it, Rajinikanth expressed the opposite stating that projects like these are necessary for development but they should be implemented without affecting the people. He also stated that farmers should get adequate compensation in terms on land and money.
