For the second time in their history, FC Goa will be involved in a title-deciding clash with Chennaiyin FC. In the final of the 2015 Indian Super League (ISL) in Goa, it was the visitors who clinched the tie in dramatic fashion with two injury-time goals.
Sergio Lobera's men started off with a dominant win against Indian Arrows (3-0) in the Round-of-16 before edging past Jamshedpur FC 4-3 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, where they faced I-League champions Chennai City FC, Goa won 3-0.
Edu Bedia's return to the first team will be a huge boost in the final, even though the team did not show any signs of weakness without the Spaniard. Given that Ahmed Jahouh is not registered for the cup competition, Goa have performed well as a team so far. Jackichand Singh has been impressive playing on the flanks with Zaid Krouch deployed behind the main striker.
ISL's all time top scorer, Ferran Corominas, leads the goalscorers' chart in the ongoing Super Cup with four goals along with ATK's Balwant Singh and Chennai City's Pedro Manzi. Corominas will be key to unlock a defence strengthened by Mailson Alves and Eli Sabia as both centre-backs seems to have found good form. Chennaiyin have conceded only once in the competition.
At the back, even though Goa have let in three goals - all against Jamshedpur - Mourtada Fall has been a rock while full backs Seriton Fernandes and Saviour Gama have done well both in attack and defense.
John Gregory has prepared a potent Chennaiyin FC side before the ultimate showdown in the Super Cup, a trophy they desperatel need after a horrid outing in the ISL.
The former champions have so far surpased teams they have not been able to beat in the ISL and Goa also happen to be another side who fall in the same category. The Marina Machans defeated Mumbai City FC 2-0, NorthEast United 2-1 and ATK 2-0 to enter the final.
Including an extra foreigner in Chris Herd to partner Dhanpal Ganesh in Chennaiyin's semi-final clash against ATK gave the team much more stability defensively as Anirudh Thapa and Gregory Nelson could both push forward.
However, the Australian's suspension may see Germanpreet Singh make his way in to the midfield. Meanwhile, with Raphael Augusto linking up play towards the attacking third, CK Vineeth is likely to continue to lead the line.
Thapa has come up with vital contributions in the attacking third, with a couple of goals and assists to his name in back-to-back games. In defense, Mailson Alves will have to stand tall against the lethal Goan frontline that has amassed 10 goals in just three games.
Can FC Goa make up for their two defeats in the ISL finals or will Chennaiyin FC add another piece of silverware to their cabinet?
