Star Times launch inter-media football tournament

Sixteen teams will vie for the ultimate bragging rights and cash awards during the tournament that will be hosted at Upper Hill

Pay Television provider Star Times has set local media houses against each other in a football tournament scheduled for 2nd June 2018, just days before the Fifa World Cup kicks-off in Russia.

Sixteen teams will vie for the ultimate bragging rights and cash awards during the tournament that will be hosted at Nairobi’s Upper Hill School. The teams have been seeded in four pots comprising four teams with the draw to determine which media houses fall into the same group due be conducted next week.

The seven-a-side tournament format entails four groups of four teams slugging it out at each other. The top two from each pool will proceed to the knockout stages until one winner is found.

Star Times has partnered with Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) for the event in the hope that most participants will be members of sports media. Entries are, however, unlimited to staff working for the various media houses, not just sports journalists.

“Journalists have forever been critical of professional players in their match reports and reviews. This tournament gives them a chance to put their skills on display so that they too can be critiqued.

"We hope to have a wonderful Fifa World Cup later and this tournament should serve to raise football interest ahead of the big kick-off,” Star Times Marketing Manager Japheth Akhulia remarked during the launch.

Radio Africa won the only Star Times Inter-Media Tournament ever staged and are upbeat of going all the way on 2nd June.

Nation Media Group, Goal.com, Standard Group, Royal Media, Mediamax, Capital FM, KBC and Kass are some of the teams on the cards.

Qwetu Radio, Ghetto, Radio Africa, Homeboyz, Lolwe, Ebru, GBS, ATG will also present teams.
