Sri Lanka has been in a state of turmoil for over 3 weeks now, since the 21 April suicide terror attack that targeted churches and hotels. Amidst the rising communal tensions in the country, citizens of Sri Lanka appealed for peace to avoid a repeat of the 1983 riots that sank the country into a civil war that lasted for 26 years.
Parts of the country were put under indefinite curfew on 14 May after violent backlash against Muslims, in which 1 man was reported killed.
But people of Sri Lanka seem determined not to let communalism tear the country apart again.
‘We Heal and Rise Together as One’
Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has urged his fellow citizens to “Stop. Breathe. Think. Open your eyes.”
STOP. BREATHE. THINK. OPEN YOUR EYES. If we lose ourselves in violence, racism, thuggery and hatred we lose our country. Unite as Sri Lankans, be peaceful, keep each other safe. Do not give into shameful, divisive political agendas. WE HEAL AND RISE TOGETHER AS ONE NATION— Kumar Sangakkara (@KumarSanga2) May 14, 2019
‘Racism Kills the Lion’
A cartoon which was tweeted by Groundviews, a local civic-media organisation last year, during the violence in Digana still holds true today.

Dear Sinhalese brothers, who have been destroying innocent Muslims’ properties,— nishard. (@iamnishard) May 13, 2019
I know that you are coming from working middle & lower class families. Do you not know how hard is it to build a house in SL? Do you not realize that you are destroying your own country? #SriLanka pic.twitter.com/Br1IEeknev
Other citizens tweeted seeking to ensure safety of fellow Muslim citizens.
