Sports Ministry De-Recognises Paralympic Committee of India Citing Misgovernance

Team Latestly

The Sports Ministry on Tuesday suspended and derecognised the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) for violating the National Sports Development Code of India. According to news agency ANI, PCI was suspended for violating the clause I (ix) and (x) of the Annexure III of the National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI) 2011. The news comes after former PCI President Rao Inderjit Singh had filed a complaint in his letter to J Chandrashekhar, secretary-general of Paralympic Committee following his removal from the post by a majority vote.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had then asked for an appropriate reply from the Paralympic body in its notice dated from July 11, 2019, to August 29. But the reply was deemed no satisfactory leading the Sports Ministry derecognising the Paralympic Committee of India. “The govt is of the view that Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has failed to follow the good governance practices as also it has violated the National Sports Code of India, 2011 and its own Constitution in removing its elected President,” the Sports Ministry was quoted as saying by the agency.

"Explanation had been sought from PCI vice Ministry''s notices dated 11-7-2019 and 29-8-2019 on the complaint. The explanation furnished by PCI was found unsatisfactory," the Ministry was quoted by Outlook India as saying in the letter. “Bye-laws of PCI have been amended without bringing the same to the consideration of District Registrar of Societies, in violation of the Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960 and Rules 1961," the letter added.

Paralympic Committee Suspended

“The Government hereby suspends the recognition of PCI with immediate effect till further orders. PCI is directed to comply with the Sports Code and ensure good governance practices in its internal functioning. The agency further reported that the decision to suspend the Paralympic body was taken at the Annual General Meeting held earlier this year in May. (With inputs from ANI)
