Interim President of Congress Sonia Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to slash the price of petrol. In a letter, she accused the government of profiting from the misery and suffering of people, even at times when international oil prices have gone south.
The letter comes at a time when in some places petrol has crossed Rs 100/litre. She drew attention to the fact that when rates went down, the advantages of a competitive pricing system were not passed on to the common man. The middle and salaried class, farmers and the poor, Gandhi wrote in her letter, are fighting an unprecedented economic downturn, widespread unemployment, wage cuts, work losses, high prices and income erosion.
