Shiv Sena Slams BJP For Compulsory Linking of Aadhaar to PDS, Ration Cards
Mumbai, October 20: The Shiv Sena has once again slammed its ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for the compulsory linking of Aadhaar card to the public food distribution system and ration cards and said it has become a ‘pain’. The remarks came following the death of a 11-year-old girl in Jharkhand.
“Santoshi Kumari’s mother went to the ration shop to buy rice, but Aadhaar came in the way. The shop owner cited rules and did not give her the ration. Following that, the little girl died of hunger. This is a sad and shocking incident,” an editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said.
The Narendra Modi government has made it mandatory to link 12-digit Aadhaar card with bank accounts, ration cards, mobile phone numbers. The Sena said that it has become a pain for the layperson rather than a convenient facility.
“The government wants to make Aadhaar card a support for the people, but if the forceful linking of Aadhaar doesn’t help the population below the poverty line, the plan has failed,” Sena said.
The Supreme Court had on August 30 said it would hear a batch of petitions on Aadhaar-related matters in November after the Centre said it would extend till December 31 the deadline to furnish Aaadhar to avail benefits of social welfare schemes.
On July 12, the apex court had said that its five-judge Constitution Bench will hear matters relating to Aadhaar, including the aspect of right to privacy.
