New Delhi, Nov 20: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who sparked a fresh controversy with his tweet on Manushi Chhillar, who won the Miss World 2017 title, apologised for offending people with his Twitter post. Asking people to ‘chill’, Shashi Tharoor said it was a ‘light-hearted tweet’ and he didn’t mean to offend Manushi Chhillar who brought Miss World title to India after 17 years.

“Guess the pun is the lowest form of humour, and the bilingual pun lower still! Apologies to the many who seem to have been righteously offended by a light-hearted tweet today. Certainly no offence was meant to a bright young girl whose answer I’ve separately praised. Please: Chill!” Shashi Tharoor tweeted. In Hindi, the word chillar means (loose change).

Taking a dig at Modi government’s demonetisation drive, the former External Affairs Minister had earlier tweeted, “What a mistake to demonetise our currency! BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World.” The pun, however, didn’t go well with many and Shashi Tharoor was massively slammed on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: “Shame on you Mr. Tharoor. You are the one who disrespected Haryanvi surname ‘Chhillar’ and linked it with a joke.” Another tweeted: “This is not funny at all. Making fun of someone’s surname is not what we expect from you…disheartened.” The National Commission of Women (NCW) termed Tharoor’s tweet on ‘derogatory and degrading’ and said it will summon the Congress leader.

A series of tweets by NCW read, “NCW condemn the tweet of @INCIndia leader @ShashiTharoor. He degraded the achievement of daughter of #haryana and #India who got glory to the country. Will he call his own daughter chillar? He must apologize immediately. NCWIndia will summon Shashi Tharoor to commission on his derogatory tweet.”

Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain said Tharoor “indulged in callous and reckless wordplay on new Miss World Manushi Chhillar”. She asked him to apologise and said the Haryana-born Chhillar was not just the pride of the state, but also of the entire nation. “Tharoor has only exposed his own debased thinking by questioning the self-respect of our daughters, the pride of the country, and the brave community ‘Chhillar’,” Jain said in a statement.
